Anyway, the meme....
1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
Travelled in an aeroplane on my own, without a 'grown-up'. Paul and I going to Paris was the first time I've air-travelled "by myself", as it were.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Nope, they are destined to fail. As ever, I have a few half-baked plans for this year, such as learning to drive, getting a new job, etc...
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope, although people at work seem to be perpetually pregnant.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
5. What countries did you visit?
France, in September.
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
No money stress. If all goes well and there are no unforeseen circumstances, with any luck (and with the help of that loan I took out in November), this may actually be a possibility.
Also, my clothing to fit me again.
7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I'm so bad at dates these days; working full-time makes everything blur together. 15th October (the day before my birthday when we went out for the family meal) was a lovely day - fantastic food, good company and getting to spend time with commoncomitatus, despite the hangover/migraine aftermath on the actual birthday. :P
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I joined a gym and actually attended regularly until real life got in the way...
9. What was your biggest failure?
And, like Paul, thanks to real life getting in the way (moving house, heatwave, general disorganisation, food poisoning, Christmas...) I then stopped attending the gym, and in fact put on about a stone thanks to eating junk food for two weeks because we couldn't get the oven to work. That was a pretty big fail, really, as I'm still trying to get back to the size I was before I started attending the frigging gym.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Food poisoning in November, and this bloody cold/cough/whatever that I've had for two weeks.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
A shiny new fridge for our shiny new house. :) (Also our lovely squishy sofa. :D)
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Eni, for epic fandom discussion, and noticing when I was going slightly insane.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The general public... I think that answer remains the same every year.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, food, travel, and apart from that - as ever - I have no idea.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Moving house. :) And also the Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary gala at Vue Star City, as I'd already been semi-indulging in POTO for a bit before then and had a hankering to see it, only for the gala to appear in October and prompt a mad flurry of fanfic-productivity (although the less said about the resultant angst and confusion, the better).
16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
"Pearl" by Katy Perry, purely for being the prompt of the epic fandom discussion that kept me sane and entertained throughout an internet-less summer. ;)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
About the same, I think. January blues and all that.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Fatter. I'm pretty sure I could fit into more of my clothes this time last year. :(
iii. richer or poorer?
About the same, probably a bit richer thanks to aforesaid loan and a pay increase, but not by much.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Gone to the cinema. We always have really good intentions to see lots of films and then simply forget or run out of time. We were supposed to see the new Sherlock Holmes this week and just didn't have time, although we are booked to see The Artist at the Electric next Saturday. :) (Also, I absolutely have to see A Monster in Paris. I don't think I need to explain why.)
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Stressed about house-hunting, or let it grind me down so much. I think I might have been pinning too much of my sanity on moving out of the flat. :P
Saw family on the 23rd as usual, spent Christmas Eve evening at the pub with friends as usual, and the actual day just Paul and I. We had goose for dinner with all the trimmings and spent a pleasant four days not doing very much before having to go back to work for three days. Bit of a weird one this year, really, as it just felt like a normal weekend...
21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
I rekindled my love for Phantom, despite fandom fail.
22. How many one-night stands?
23. What was your favorite TV program?
Probably still Glee this year, although I've been re-enjoying Frasier thanks to Comedy Central repeats, and we managed to watch Firefly and some of Six Feet Under. I don't remember watching anything else "new" this year, although I have a lot of Christmas stuff still to catch up on...
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I tolerate my manager for the most part and she wasn't managing us this time last year, if that counts...
25. What was the best book you read?
I need to start keeping proper lists. I've just finished The Hunchback of Notre Dame (and started Les Misérables, so will doubtless still be reading that in about six years...). *investigates* Oh, according to LJ I was actually reading Hunchback this time last year. So there we go. :P
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Hm, I don't think I had one this year... Although I am tempted to say Guster because of the brain-breaking power of "Either Way"...
27. What did you want and get?
Somewhere nice to live, and some time out of the UK, even though it wasn't quite as anticipated.
28. What did you want and not get?
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
Black Swan is a definite, and that was early on in the year. Also Pirates 4 and Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows: Part 1. (I enjoyed Part 2 as well but Part 1 blew me away with the detail and scope of it...)
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 30. On the actual day I had a migraine / hangover thanks to two days of drinking beforehand (heh), but nonetheless: in the morning my mum came over to drop off my presents and stuff that she'd rescued from the pub the night before, then drove us all (me, Paul and Eni) to the allotment so Eni could meet the chickens. Paul went upstairs to have a nap (I think, or he might have been on the PC), whilst Eni and I played on the Wii for several hours - at least until the Wii fit board's batteries ran out. Then at about six-ish we took Eni into town on the bus as I tried to fend off the migraine, dropped her at the station, and had dinner at Cafe Rouge.
Apart from the migraine, it was quite pleasant. :)
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Realising a lot earlier than in order to get a decent house, one needs to be quick off the mark. If I'd done that in the first place the entire process might have been quicker. (Agents being helpful and opening at weekends / after five o'clock would also have helped.)
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Whatever I could just about squeeze my ever-expanding self into, unfortunately. I don't want to buy new clothes if I'm going to lose the weight so the only stuff that fits is the stuff I bought intentionally bigger - about two pairs of jeans and my work trousers, basically, though thankfully most of my tops still fit. Just.
33. What kept you sane?
Fandom, for most of February (I will finish the meme next month), and then the prospect of moving house. In actual fact, once we'd finalised on this place, I didn't have anything to do with my lunchtimes, as they'd been taken up with obsessively checking rightmove every day for new properties in a paranoid attempt not to lose any more decent houses.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I'm ashamed to say it, but I think it might be Giles Coren. This is so BAD AND WRONG, as he's not my type in the slightest (beardy, vulgar, awful table manners), so I really can't explain it. I think my equally BAD AND WRONG RP-ship of him and Sue Perkins has not assisted my crush, but honestly, I follow them both on Twitter and they flirt constantly with each other, which is NOT HELPING. Damn them.
Oh, and Erik, again. I'd sort of missed that one, in a weird way, though it was refreshing to understand why after all those years of it being inexplicable. :D
Other than that, it was the usual suspects of Johnny Depp, Noel Fielding, etc. Heh, I might do a post like jackiesjottings with picspam of my awful taste so you can all mock me. :P
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
No specific issues really, just the general mess we've gotten ourselves into.
36. Who did you miss?
I missed my old cat Paws this year (he died in 2001 - maybe the decade is significant), which I think was because we were cat-sitting in July just before moving and have several neighbouring cats who visit our garden.
I've also really missed Sharn since she left Legal in August. I saw her get on the 120 bus just after Christmas but wasn't quite sure it was her until she got off again, and she didn't spot me either, but it did remind me that I must email her. (I was going to invite her to my post-work birthday drinks, but a number of factors put me off, the worst of which was an old uni friend deleting me on Facebook. We were close at uni for the year we were both there [I was in first year, she in third] and remained so for a few years. I found her on Facebook and discovered she'd gotten married and had two children in the intervening period, and in all honesty, she only used her Facebook account to advertise her business anyway. I probably should have taken the hint when she didn't respond to my tentative offer to meet up in Worcester when I was there doing the Bach concert. Oddly enough, her husband kept me on his friends and I'd only met him once! I subsequently deleted him as a result. This happened a couple of weeks before my birthday and I was so afraid of rejection that I didn't email Sharn about drinks. On the night in question, I regretted that decision. Ah well, can't be helped now.)
37. Who was the best new person you met?
A few people have started with our team who are lovely - namely Caroline, Emily and Sian. I knew them all before from other teams before they moved to South but they've really gelled with the team dynamic.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
Don't tar everyone with the same brush. People may well surprise you.
Right, I only intended to go on the PC "for a bit", but this has taken longer than I thought. I suppose I should go to bed. :P
Belated happy new year, all!
